How do I register for unemployment benefit in Bahrain?

Register at the Ministry of Labour within 30 days of your job ending, and payment runs from day 8 (Art. 13). The outer limit is 3 months (Art. 21).

Checked 21 October 2026

So register in your first month if you can. Later than that, ask the Ministry when payment would start.

Get your datesEvery deadline as a date, from your last working day.

What to do now

  1. Register at the Ministry of Labour in your first 30 days. The leaving plan shows the date.
  2. Keep your residence in order while you look for work.
  3. If your employer ended the contract, a termination claim must be filed within 30 days too (Art. 135).

Example only: an expat whose employer ended the job, with a last working day of 7 Nov 2026. Tap it to build your own.

What to ask HR

  1. What reason will you record for the end of my job?
  2. Have my insurance contributions been paid every month?

Also happening to you?

Who qualifies

  • Private-sector workers covered by insurance, expats included.
  • A first claim needs 12 months in a row of insured work.
  • You did not resign.
  • You were not dismissed for disciplinary reasons.
  • You have not reached retirement age.

Extra rules for expats

You must stay lawfully resident in Bahrain to look for work (Art. 10). Payment ends if your residence becomes illegal or you leave Bahrain for good (Art. 24).

After your work permit is cancelled, you have 30 days to leave or transfer to a new employer. An employer can renew that once, for 30 more days, at the NPRA (bahrain.bh).

How much it pays

It pays 60% of your average monthly wage over the last 12 months (Art. 11). The cap is BD 1,000 a month.

The minimum is BD 200 a month, or your average wage if that is lower (Art. 12).

It is paid for up to 9 months, and no more than 9 months in any 24 (Art. 14).

Say your average wage was BD 500. Sixty percent gives BD 300 a month, for up to 9 months.

Who does what

The Ministry of Labour registers you and decides whether you qualify. SIO pays.

You can receive it on top of your end of service pay (Art. 16).

Contributions are 1% of the wage from the worker, 1% from the employer and 1% from the government (Art. 6).

Aid for first-time job seekers is a separate scheme, for Bahrainis only.

If you also have a claim against your employer

Unemployment pay does not stop you claiming your dues. A claim for termination compensation goes to the Labour Case Administration Office within 30 days (Art. 135).

Other claims under your contract are heard for 1 year after it ends (Art. 136). Workers pay no court costs unless the claim is dismissed.

Keep proof of the date you registered.
