How long is probation in Oman?

At most 3 months if you are paid monthly, and 2 months otherwise (Art. 37). Either side can end the contract during it with at least 7 days' notice.

Checked 23 October 2026

These are the longest periods the Labour Law allows. Your contract sets your own, so read it before you sign.

Get your datesFor when this job ends: every deadline as a date.

What to do now

  1. Find the probation length in your offer and check it fits your pay type.
  2. Check whether your contract is fixed-term or open-ended, and its notice period.
  3. If you decide to leave in probation, give at least 7 days' notice in writing and keep a copy.
  4. When a job ends, build your leaving plan for the dates that follow.

What to ask HR

  1. On what date does my probation end?
  2. Is my contract fixed-term or open-ended, and what notice does it set?

Only once

Your employer can put you on probation only once.

Ending it

You or your employer can end the contract during probation. Whoever ends it must tell the other side at least 7 days before.

After probation: an open-ended contract

  • Either side can end it, for a legitimate reason, with written notice (Art. 38).
  • Notice is 30 days if you are paid monthly and 15 days otherwise.
  • Your contract can set a longer notice.
  • Whoever skips the notice pays the other side the gross wage for the notice period, or what is left of it.

During a notice period you get 10 paid hours a week to look for a new job (Art. 39).

After probation: a fixed-term contract

The contract must state how much notice either side gives if it does not want to renew. Your employer's notice must be at least 1 month (Art. 36).

Leaving without notice

Article 41 lists the cases where you may walk away without serving notice and still keep your gratuity. One is going unpaid for more than 2 months in a row.

Your gratuity

Gratuity is at least a month's basic pay for each year of service, with part years counted (Art. 61). If your job ends close to probation, ask the Ministry of Labour how your service is counted.

Resigning does not reduce it. A dismissal on one of the grounds in Article 40 removes it.

Before you sign

  • Check whether you are paid monthly, because it sets your probation and notice.
  • Check the probation length in your offer.
  • Check your basic pay on its own, because your gratuity is worked out on it.
