Leaving a job in Qatar: what you're owed and by when
- Once you complete a year, you are owed at least 3 weeks' basic pay for each year of service (Art. 54).
- Resigning does not reduce it.
- Your employer pays everything by the end of the next working day after your contract ends (Art. 67).
- If you are not paid, a claim lapses 1 year after the contract ends.

An example, in order
This is the order things happen in after your last day. Your own dates are in the leaving plan.
- 7 Nov 2026Your last working day
- Final payBy the end of the working day after your contract ends
- Unemployment insuranceNone in Qatar's Social Insurance Law
- Visa grace periodWithin 90 days of the day your residence permit is cancelled
- 7 Nov 20271 year: last day to claim unpaid dues
Example: an expat whose employer ended the job, with a last working day of 7 Nov 2026.
Your gratuity
- At least 3 weeks' pay for each year of service.
- Worked out on your last basic pay.
- Part years count in proportion.
- You need 1 full year of service first.
Your employer may deduct money you owe it from the gratuity.
Only a dismissal without notice on one of the grounds in Article 61 removes the gratuity. One ground is more than 7 days in a row of absence without a lawful reason.
In some cases you can leave without notice and keep the full gratuity. Examples are your employer breaking the contract, an assault, or a final committee decision in your favour (Art. 51).

Notice and unused leave
After probation, either side can end the contract with written notice. It is 1 month in your first 2 years and 2 months after that (Art. 49).
Whoever skips the notice pays the other side your basic wage for the notice period.
Leaving Qatar without keeping to the notice rules can block a new work permit for 1 year.
During probation, which lasts up to 6 months, moving to a new employer needs 1 month's written notice. Leaving Qatar needs the notice in your contract, up to 2 months (Art. 39).
Ask the Ministry of Labour how your unused annual leave is paid out.
Final pay
Wages and all other dues are payable by the end of the next working day after your contract ends (Art. 67).
Skipped the Article 49 notice? Your employer has up to 7 days from the day you left.
Know your gratuity figure before the payment lands, so you can check it. Keep a copy of your contract and your ID, because the Ministry asks for both if you complain.

Unemployment insurance
Qatar's Social Insurance Law has no unemployment branch, and it covers Qataris only (Law 1/2022, Art. 2). Ask the Ministry of Labour what support there is when a job ends.
Your visa
Once your residence permit is cancelled or expires, the law gives you 90 days to leave Qatar (Law 21/2015, Art. 24).
Moving to a new job in Qatar? Ask your new employer how the switch works, and settle it before the 90 days run out.
If you are not paid
Start with the Ministry of Labour complaint form (PDF). Ask the Ministry of Labour how to file online, through mol.gov.qa. See all six countries side by side.
- Ask the Ministry of Labour's Labour Relations Department to settle. It has 7 days to try (Art. 115 bis).
- If it does not settle, it sends the dispute to the Labour Dispute Settlement Committee within 3 working days.
- The committee decides within 3 weeks of its first hearing. Its decision takes effect at once.
- Either side can appeal to the Court of Appeal within 15 days of the decision.
A claim lapses 1 year after the contract ends (Art. 10). Asking the Ministry to settle pauses that clock.
Worker claims are free of court fees. The Ministry's complaint form asks for your contract in Arabic and a copy of your ID.
Questions
- Do I lose my gratuity if I resign in Qatar?
- No. The gratuity has no reduction for resigning once you have a full year (Art. 54).
- When must my final pay be paid in Qatar?
- By the end of the working day after your contract ends. If you left without the notice Article 49 asks for, within 7 days of leaving (Art. 67).
- How long can I stay in Qatar after my permit is cancelled?
- 90 days from the cancellation or expiry of your residence permit (Law 21/2015, Art. 24).

- 1 month in your first 2 years of work and 2 months after that, in writing (Art. 49).
