The Gulf Expat

Do I get gratuity if I resign in Qatar?

Yes, once you complete 1 year. The gratuity is at least 3 weeks' basic pay for each year, with no reduction for resigning (Art. 54).

Checked 22 October 2026

What to do now

  1. Check that you have passed your first full year before you resign.
  2. Give written notice of the right length and keep a copy.
  3. Build your leaving plan for your claim date.

What to ask HR

  1. What last basic pay will you use for my gratuity?
  2. On what date will my gratuity be paid?

How it is worked out

  • At least 3 weeks' pay for every year of service.
  • On your last basic pay, not your allowances.
  • Part years count in proportion.

Say your basic pay is QAR 6,000 and you leave after 4 years. Our figures take a day's pay as basic divided by 30, so QAR 200.

Four years at 21 days is 84 days, so the gratuity is QAR 16,800.

Your contract can give you more than this minimum. Your employer may deduct money you owe it.

When it can be lost

Only a dismissal without notice on one of the grounds in Article 61 removes it. One ground is unexcused absence of over 7 days in a row, or over 15 days in a year.

Resigning is not one of those grounds.

Your notice

Give notice in writing. It is 1 month in your first 2 years of work and 2 months after that (Art. 49).

If you skip it, you owe your employer your basic wage for the notice period.

Leaving Qatar without keeping to the notice rules can block a new work permit for 1 year.

Leaving without notice

Some cases let you leave without notice and keep the full gratuity (Art. 51). They include your employer breaking the contract, an assault, fraud when you were hired, or serious danger at work.

A final decision of a Labour Dispute Settlement Committee in your favour is another.

During probation

Probation lasts up to 6 months. To move to another employer during it, give 1 month's written notice (Art. 39).

When it is paid

It is due with your last wages, by the end of the next working day after your contract ends (Art. 67).

Skipped the Article 49 notice? Your employer has up to 7 days from the day you left. If it is still not paid, you have 1 year from the end of the contract to claim.

Before you resign

  • Count your service from your first day to the day the contract will end. That can be sooner than you plan.
  • Check whether you are past your second year, because that changes your notice.
  • Ask HR in writing when the gratuity will be paid.
