Going home from the Gulf: your money, your tax and your pension
Sort three things before you fly. Get your final pay in writing and choose how to send the money. Then check your tax status at home for the year you arrive.
Tax at home turns on how many days you spend there that year and when your employer pays you. Ask a tax adviser at home before the money moves.
Where are you going home to?
Make sure your final pay is right first
Your end of service money can be a large sum. Check it before you leave. The leaving guide for your Gulf country gives the formula, and the day it is due where the law sets one.
- Leaving a job in the UAE
- Leaving a job in Saudi Arabia
- Leaving a job in Kuwait
- Leaving a job in Qatar
- Leaving a job in Oman
- Leaving a job in Bahrain
Leaving Qatar with pay still owed? File your claim before you fly. A claim lapses 1 year after your contract ends (Art. 10). Filing with the Ministry of Labour pauses that clock (Art. 115 bis). Get your Qatar claim date, or read the Qatar claim steps.
Keep your final settlement statement and your last payslip. Banks and transfer services may ask where a large sum came from.
Which services send money from your Gulf country
Which service you can use depends on where you pay from. These let you send online and pay in that Gulf country:
- From the UAE: Western Union and Remitly.
- From Saudi Arabia: Western Union and STC Bank.
- From Kuwait: Western Union, LuLu Money, BEC Pay and Al Mulla Exchange.
- From Qatar: Western Union.
- From Oman: ask your bank or an exchange house for a quote.
- From Bahrain: Western Union.
Check two or three quotes. What counts is how much lands in your home account, after the rate and the fee.
